EVENTING CANTERBURY - ONE DAY HORSE TRIALS

AMBERLEY - SUNDAY, MARCH 28 2010

With less than six weeks to the NZ Community Trust South Island FEI Three Day Event competition heated up at Eventing Canterbury’s autumn one day horse trial at the Amberley last weekend.

Striding Edge farrier Brent Jury came from behind to win the Advanced class with SE Big with a faster time across country, finishing just ahead of Emily Butcher on Transcend – the only two starters. Butcher however was in fine form in the small Open Intermediate class taking the quinella with her experienced mounts My Shout and Benjamin James.

West Melton’s Kate Cavanagh took out the Open Novice with Mendelssohn by a slim margin from Kirsty Ogilvie on The Intern, second. Kirsten Beaven on RV Tiviano was more than 10 penalty points in arrears third, with Cavanagh on her second ride Gibraltar Rock, fourth.

Butcher was also successful in the hotly contested Pre Novice with Dambala, finishing on their dressage score of 37.1. Despite some time penalties on the cross country Bonnie Farrant on Montana Boxster held onto second with Zoe Preston on Zambirdee, third.

The two Training divisions were won by Ellie Braddock on Order of the Phoenix, continuing their strong run of form this season, and Anna Schroeder on Duggens Dew, respectively, both finishing on their dressage scores. Ashburton’s Monica Archibald onSpectcular Trio won the large Pre Training class.

All eyes are now on the NZ Community Trust South Island FEI Three Day Event which is to be held at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island from April 22-25. The event, which is traditionally the highlight of the South Island eventingseason, has the added attraction of hosting the biannual Trans Tasman Young Rider Challenge; the first time the event has been hosted by Eventing Canterbury. The Young Rider Challenge will see the best young riders from both countries do battle in a CCI 2* competition. It was last held in Australia at Camperdown in 2009 (in lieu of 2008 which was postponed because of Equine Influenza) where the New Zealand team was successful.

The South Island Three Day will also mark the finish of the Mitavite Vitamite Cool Performer Challenge which has been running for Pre Novice and Novice horses all season. It will also include the prestigious South Island Young Event Horse Championship, as well as CIC3*, CCI2*, CCI*, pre novice, training and pre training divisions. Entries close April 5.
