EVENTING CANTERBURYONE DAY HORSE TRIAL – SHEDS NZNEC McLEANS ISLAND Ashburton’s Larissa Srhoy has given her chances of making the New Zealand Young Rider team to tackle the Aussies as part of the South Island Three Day Event and Trans Tasman Challenge next month a boost by winning the first Advanced start of the South Island’s autumn season Hosted by Eventing Canterbury, the event was held at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, last weekend, attracting strong numbers with more than 140 riders taking part in perfect, yet hot conditions. Srhoy, riding the thoroughbred gelding Starburst, started well, leading from the dressage phase after posting a smart 37.5. She was clear cross country picking up just 7.2 time penalties, and collected 16 faults in the show jumping to finish on 60.7, well clear of northerner Karen Neiderer on Cape Palliser, second. Neiderer, who had made the long trip south from Taupo to compete chasing a qualification score for Horse Of the Year and the National Championships in Taupo, began well, but picked up a hefty 27.6 time penalties on the cross country and had one refusal. In action-packed Intermediate West Melton’s Emily Butcher recovered, albeit a little battle weary, from a horror fall on the cross country from her Advanced horse Transcend to win aboard My Shout. Leader after the dressage, Butcher was last to go, producing a foot perfect clear cross country round despite collecting heavy time faults. He went on to produce the only fault-free round in the show jumping. Butcher opted to withdraw her second ride Benjamin James. Kate Cavanagh picked up second with Mendelssohn with a strong cross country round ahead of Nicola Carrick and Bellwood Raja, third. Cavanagh’s success continued in the Open Novice taking the honours with her lesser experienced mount, Gibraltar Rock, with James Avery and Amarillo, second, and Madison Crowe on Durpree, third. Avery’s second placing further aids his chances of securing the Eventing Canterbury Mitavite sponsored Vitamite Cool Performer Challenge open to pre novice and novice horses. The 17-year-old apprentice farrier came into the second half of the season with a slim margin over Butcher, who was lying second and third. The hotly contested Pre Novice sections went to Amanda Brown on Chinwag and Susie Stewart on Plus Fore respectively, while the large Training sections were won by Ellie Braddock on Order of the Phoenix and Sophie Abbott on Johnny Suede, Annabel Wigley won both Pre-Training classes with Chicks Digme and Billabong.
