EVENTING CANTERBURY – ONE DAY EVENT

Sheds NZ NEC McLeans Island

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7

Results from McLean's Island 07 November 2009

This was the Final event in the Eventing Canterbury / Eventing Nelson  Spring Accumulator

-  Open Novice  - Pre Novice  Final results.

Eventing Canterbury - Mitavite Accumulator - Vitamite Cool Performer Challenge - Leaderboard  prior to this event.

Canterbury’s golden girl Emily Butcher will head to the North Island with confidence after a commanding performance at Eventing Canterbury’s Horse Trials at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island on Saturday, taking the quinella in the Open Intermediate class.

Lying second after the dressage with the less experienced, Benjamin James, Butcher moved up to take the lead with a clear cross country adding just 14.8 time penalties and a foot perfect show jumping to their dressage score. Butcher was fifth after dressage on her second ride Transcend, but with the fastest cross-country round of the class incurring just 13.2 time penalties, she moved up to second.

Brent Jury on SE Big also put up a strong performance to finish third more than 10 penalties in arrears, while dressage leader Annabel Wigley on the inexperienced Brogan, having his first open intermediate start, dropped back to fourth with hefty time penalties on the cross country despite going clear.

Butcher will now head to the North Island to tackle the country’s best event riders at either the New Zealand One Day Horse Trials Championships to be held at Richfields later this month or next month’s Puhinui Three Day Event in Auckland.

Attracting just the two starters, the Advanced class was taken out by Dunedin’s Christen Hayde on Tandarra Sweet As ahead of Ashburton’s Larissa Srhoy on Starburst, who had one stop on the cross country. Both incurred big time penalties over the testing track.

Nelson’s James Avery on Amarillo continued his dream this spring run downing a strong field to win the Open Novice, further extending his lead in the combined Eventing Nelson and Eventing Canterbury Spring Accumulator Series.

Sitting third after dressage behind Wigley on Frog Rock and Butcher on My Shout, Avery took the lead with a clear cross country inside the time and just one rail in the show jumping.

Butcher’s show jumping rail and three time faults proved costly, dropping her to second overall, while Wigley dropped right out of it after striking trouble on what proved to be an influential cross country course. Hayderiding Tandarra Sweet As finished third with South Canterbury’s Billy Bragg on Kabo Hallucination fouth. Eight of the 19-strong field did not finish, and only one rider produced a clear show jumping round inside the time allowed.

In the Bomac Pre Novice Rangiora’s Natasha McCurdy on Red Label prevailed, winning by a slim margin over Sarah Feary on Bollinger, second, with Tracey Barrett on Croftlea Rock N Roll third, and Kerri Hanna on Kronfield J, fourth.

Madeline Tapley on Ridgeway Smarty Pants took out the big Training class with Sophie Griffith on King Edward and Sam Wilson on Woodford II taking out their respective Pre Training classes.
