Cust’s Brent Jury has taken out the Advanced class at the Eventing Canterbury One Day Horse Trial at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island today with a strong performance.

Jury riding SE Big, moved up from third after the dressage phase with a fast cross country round to take the lead ahead of Emily Butcher of West Melton and Transcend. Dressage leader Lauren Enright on Puss N Boots was eliminated on the cross country. Both Butcher and Jury dropped three rails in the show jumping.

Sam Taylor of Ohoka produced a winning performance in the five-strong Intermediate class, taking the honours with 49.3 penalties aboard Leo Degas, well clear of nearest rival Butcher on her starry grey Dambala. Less than a penalty separated Taylor and Butcher after the dressage, but Taylor took the lead with a faster cross country round collecting just 11.6 time penalties taking all the straight routes.

Rangiora’s Susie Stewart riding the ultra-talented Cowboy, fresh from being part of the winning Eyreton Pony Club team at the prestigious Springston Trophy last weekend, finished third on debut at that level. Stewart was also awarded the prize for the Saddlery Barn sponsored Best Performed Young Rider at this event.

The strong Open Novice class went to Reefton visitor Eve Hawes riding Turbulance, who produced one of the best performances of the day to lead from start to finish. Hawes displayed foot-perfect jumping to take the win despite adding 3.2 time penalties on the cross country. Cust’s James Avery on Amarillo moved up to finish second, the only rider to finish on his dressage score, with Kate Cavanagh on Gibraltar Rock third. Recently returned international rider Annabel Wigley made a strong comeback to New Zealand competition finishing fourth and fifth with Brogan and Frog Rock respectively.

After a close fought battle eventual honours in the Fiber Fresh Pre Novice went to Oxford’s Sarah Feary on Bollinger ahead of Penny Lawrence on Imagine It and Giles Gormack on Woodbine Heritage. All three riders finished on the same score after producing top performances, but after a countback to the optimum cross country time, Feary was announced the winner.

The large Training class was taken out by Alana Baker of Nelson riding Sir Tobias Hay, with the two Pre Training divisions to Stephen Montgomery on Citadelle and Sophie Griffith on King Edward respectively.
