SOUTH ISLAND THREE DAY EVENT Friday, April 24 – Sunday, April 26 Canterbury Park (Canterbury A&P showgrounds), Wigram Road, Christchurch
West Melton’s Emily Butcher has retained her lead on Gibstar in the DEVI Heating Systems FEI CC1* after the demanding cross country phase of the South Island Three Day Event, held at Canterbury Park today. Butcher started the day in prime position lying first on Gibstar and third on her second ride Transcend, and has retained both positions. She added no faults on the cross country flying around the Auckland-based Tich Massey designed course with apparent ease. Reefton’s Eve Hawes has continued her strong performance, holding onto second, and having added 0.4 of a time penalty Prebbleton’s Alison Orange and Woodbridge slipped to fourth. Riders in the Tavern Harewood FEI CCI2* did not fair so well. Dressage leader Ashburton’s Larissa Srhoy was forced to withdraw before the cross country as her horse Starburst was showing signs of lameness, and Otago’s Christen Hayde andTandarra Sweet As had the misfortune of coming to grief on just three fences from home. Hayde looked to have done a foot-perfect round clearing all the big questions but fell at Fence 22, The Tires. Horse and rider were both alright but FEI rules state one fall equals elimination. The leaderboard was relatively unchanged in the Back on Track Pre Novice with few faults recorded. Broadfield’s Penny Lawrence and Imagine retained their slim lead with a clear cross country round. Kirsty Ogilvie and State of Play remain second, with Natasha McCurdy and Red Label, third. Less than two rails separate the first six placeholders going into the final show jumping phase tomorrow. Kirsten Beaven on RV Tiviano and Kirsty Pierson on Smart Cookie will go into the show jumping phase leading their respective Training sections, while Timaru’s Laura Bishell has held onto the lead in the Pacificvet Pre Training. The penultimate showjumping phase will be held tomorrow, starting at 9am.
